Have you ever heard of the tradition of senior jeans? You may have seen the trend on platforms such as Instagram or TikTok, but were you ever curious? Many don’t realize that the senior jeans tradition has been around for quite some time.
Origins of the Trend
The idea originated from a group of boys at Indiana University who spotted a pair of corduroy pants in a window at a department store. The group of boys decides to each buy a pair for themselves and design them with what they desire. Before the term “senior jeans” was coined, they were previously known as cords. When they set trade for each of their peers, their ideas spread in such a creative manner to other colleges in the state of Indiana, such as Purdue University. However, the mesmerizing tradition is now officially back and ready to be decorated.

This year, many seniors have taken part in this trend, wearing their jeans to football games and to show school spirit. Seniors like Joyce Kabamba base their jeans around who they are. Kabamba says that his inspiration was “to represent my country while still representing my faith at the same time, together to make art.” Kabamba gives credit to junior Keanu Ramirez, who made the jeans for him.
For many, the act of making your senior jeans is a fun process. For senior Paige Knight, creating her senior jeans was a creative process, especially creating them alongside her friends. “You really get to express yourself, and putting my own imagination into it, it can be whatever I want… you can put all of different things on your jeans,” Knight says.
Senior jeans are a popularized trend at West High that emphasize expression, personality and identity among students. If the art of senior jeans inspires you, we encourage you to create your own.
