Boys Bowling celebrated senior night against Dubuque Senior at Cadillac XBC, varsity won 3217 to 2797. But seniors weren’t the only ones being acknowledged as the Wahawks honored Dubuque senior sophomore Sophie Jasper, who was diagnosed with leukemia and is beginning treatment in Iowa City making this the first meet that Sophie would miss. Orange ribbons symbolizing leukemia awareness were passed out to the bowlers and spectators.
The most notable performances included Aiden Berry (SO) who had 474 total pins, Rush Steen (FR) with 458 total pins, and Ben Geer (JR) with 437 total pins. The two senior captains Tayvon Homolar and Drew Britson had a good night, Homolar had 430 total pins while Britson had 396 total pins.
The Wahawks have been cruising this year and don’t look like they’re stopping anytime soon. They are currently undefeated ranking them as the first overall team in the state. Keeping the state title is a goal for Coach Steen “Our goal is to finish the regular season undefeated, which we have yet to do since I’ve been here as coach,” he says.
The team has been dominating which is clear when looking at the team’s stats. Homolar leads the team with 3142 total pins this year. However, the bowler with the highest game is Rush who bowled a perfect 300 earlier in the season.
Britson and Homolar are looking to get their third bowling state title after winning one in 2021 and 2023. Not only did they win the state title last year Homolar had the highest series score of the year with an insane 565 total pins.
West has always been strong at bowling as we have won two state championships in the last three years. Homolar and Britson were both a part of the varsity teams that went on to win state as they have been on varsity for all four years they have bowled with West. During Homolar’s time at West, his favorite part was “being first-team all-state since freshman year or being nominated to be bowler of the year in the nation.” He also has high hopes for this year in their chance to make history in being the first ever 3A team to win back-to-back state titles since bowling became a sanctioned high school sport in 2010. West is also looking for its first individual state champion which Homolar said is his main goal for this year.
