The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is a professional women’s soccer league at the top of the United States soccer league system. The league is owned by the 14 current NWSL teams. In recent years, the league has announced that they will be expanding and adding more teams in different cities. The states range from California to North Carolina. The teams are continuing to make history across not only our country’s women’s sports history, but also the world’s.
One of the most recent NWSL teams’, the Kansas City Current, has a new home in Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City is known for its professional sports teams such as the Chiefs football team, the Royals baseball team and the Sporting soccer team. However, two things stand out about these teams. None of them consist of female athletes and they each have their own stadium and practice facility.
On Dec. 7, 2020, the NWSL announced its decision on an expansion in Kansas City. The owners are Chris Long, Angie Long, Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany. Patrick and Brittany Mahomes both have a history with football and soccer. Brittany played collegiate soccer and played one year as a forward for the Icelandic club UMF Afturelding.
Almost four years later, the Kansas City Current hosted the Portland Thorns for their first game at the CPKC Stadium located at the Berkley Riverfront Park on Saturday, March 16. The game was filled with historical moments for the NWSL; the first time the NWSL was broadcasted on ABC, Alex Pfeiffer became the youngest goal scorer in league history and the first sold-out crowd for the stadium with 11,500 people watching the historic game. In addition, the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) stadium is the first stadium built worldwide for a professional women’s sports team and is the second most-watched NWSL game in history.
