The Waterloo West High Wahawks and East High Trojans basketball are one of the longest-standing high school basketball rivalries in the state. Whenever the Trojans and the Wahawks set foot onto the court it is nothing short of electrifying. On Saturday, February 1 basketball fans from all corners of Waterloo gathered in West High’s Siddens Gymnasium.
To start off the day, the girls’ basketball teams from both East and West played four fast-paced and engaging quarters of basketball. In the end, the West High Wahawks came out on top with a score of 71-24.
Senior Sydnie Wass expressed great gratitude for each and every one of her teammates. Wass is the only senior on the girls Basketball team which makes her experience very unique. Wass remarked that “since this is my last game it just made me want to go out there and do my very best.” Wass is extremely proud of all the work that her team has achieved this season and loves playing alongside so many wonderful women.
Shortly thereafter, the boys took to the court. This game between the Trojans and the Wahawks was full of just as much energy. Once again, the Wahawks came out on top with a score of 71-56. The Wahawks and the Trojans struggled, fighting back and forth for the first half of the game until Jahlil Manago made a buzzer beater half court shot right before the half. This shot gave the Wahawks the momentum to finish off the rest of the game stronger than before.
Varsity cheerleader, Delilah Schultz was absolutely blown away by this happening right before her eyes. Schultz remarked that “she plays off the energy of the game” to keep her going when her energy is low. There is truly no shortage of energy in that gymnasium and history was made once again.
