Cliff Berinobis Coaching Recap

For the 2022-23 season, Head Coach Cliff Berinobis had one of his most successful seasons.

From earning his 100th win as a coach to bringing his team to a sub-state game, Berinobis has truly been an impactful coach for the Wahawks.

"My time at Waterloo West High School has been a life changing experience and I cannot express enough how much I was supported by everyone at West High School," Berinobis says.

1/17 West V Charles City

With 2023 graduate Si’Marion Anderson earning the Wahawks 17 points against the Charles City Comets, the Wahawks took another victory with a final score of 52-40.

(Current) Junior Jahlil Manago would make a mark during the game with his nine rebounds, allowing the Wahawks to be offense for a majority of the varsity game.

Following the game, the Wahawk boys basketball team would host their first poster signing for students and community members to have autographed posters of the basketball team.

2/7 West v Western Dubuque

With 2023 graduate Si’Marion Anderson being the point carrier for the game with 23 points, the Wahawks pulled through with yet another victory. (Current) Junior Jahlil Manago also had an eventful night as he scored 10 points for the Wahawks. With his strong defense and offense, Manago played a big part in the Wahawk victory.

Head Coach Cliff Berinobis celebrated his 99th victory as the Wahawks defeated the Bobcats. The community was in anticipation waiting for his 100th victory as a coach.

In a triple header against Western Dubuque, freshmen and sophomores also pulled through with victories, ending the night in a Wahwak sweep.

2/17 West v Cedar Rapids Prairie

With senior Keishaun Pendleton scoring 27 points for the Wahawks, West High defeated Cedar Rapids Prairie with a final score of 63-59 to celebrate the end of their regular season games.

Before the game, seniors were represented as their high school basketball careers would come to an end. Head Coach Cliff Berinobis thanked his athletes for their dedication to the team as well as their parents for putting in the work as well.

2/24 West v Cedar Rapids Washington

On February 24, 2023, the Wahawks would take their final victory of the season against Cedar Rapids Washington.

As (2022-23) sophomore Jahlil Manago earned 20 points for the Wahawks, West defeated Cedar Rapids Washington with a final score of 75-64.

This victory would be the last game the Wahawks played on their home court, but would also send them to the sub-state tournament.

Sub-State Finish

In February, the boys basketball team made their first sub-state appearance since 2020.

Going against Des Moines Valley at Marshalltown High School, the Wahawks fell short in the first round of sub-state games with a final score of 66-41.

2023 graduates Si'Marion Anderson and Keishaun Pendleton would lead the Wahawks as they earned a combined total of 23 points against Valley.
