Nakia Ollivierre is not a single sport athlete. She plays basketball not only for West but also for Pure Prep, an AAU team in Iowa. This year she transferred from AGWSR a 1A high school in Ackly Iowa. Ollivierre is known for her high-scoring abilities and her ability to make it to the paint without question. Not only this but she is ranked 5th in the state, just below Jenica Lewis, Jayla Williams, Trishelle Mille, and Macy Comito.

When asked how it feels to have Ollivierre be a part of the West High girls basketball team this year, assistant coach AJ Cassidy said “I think we’re really fortunate that Nakia moved in… Nakia has got a great work ethic… you know she’s constantly looking for ways to improve her game, whether it’s coming in on Sundays or weekends to try to fine-tune her skills. So she’s been a great addition as have the other two transfers that have come to us.”

Cassidy believes that Ollivierre will contribute quite a bit this year. “I think she brings a lot of energy. Obviously, she was one of the fastest cross-country times in state history and I think she’ll bring a lot of energy and tenacity on defense. Obviously, she’s got the ability to score as well… so we’re excited to see what she can do this year,” he shares.

Ollivierre is a fierce competitor, known for her drive and love for the sport of basketball. We can also see this drive from how she talks about the game. As a top returning scoring leader this year, “It feels really good I just feel like I need to definitely go out there and prove to everyone that I can still do it in an even higher class, ” Ollivierre said.

Ollivierre also talked out her hopes for the season, “Mostly five in a row season conference champs and definitely five in a row state tournament appearances. We’ll see how far we can get there, our saying this year is continuing the tradition so I’m pretty sure we’ll do that.”

The West basketball team looks very different this year with seven seniors having graduated after a devastating first-round state loss in the 2022-2023 season. They now have an addition of three new transfers two being sophomores Nakia Ollivierre, Agum Matit, and senior Brooklyn Love.

Although the team has seen a lot of changes in the past year we are hopeful for another good season.
