The Iowa Department of Education tracks the average daily attendance of every school district in Iowa. Out of 328 public schools, Waterloo Community School district had the lowest average daily attendance for K-12 students in the 2022-23 school year, with an average of 87.3% of students attending each day.
In the 2021-22 school year, Waterloo had the third lowest K-12 average daily attendance with 87.4% of students attending each day. Des Moines Independent Community School District had the second lowest with 86.6% and Burlington had the lowest average daily attendance with 85.9% of students attending each day. Although Waterloo’s average daily attendance only dropped by 0.1% from the two school years, Burlington, Des Moines, and other school districts were able to increase the number of students attending each day. With the attendance of the district seemingly going down each year, what will the district do to combat this issue?
