On August 30, The West High football team defeated the East High Trojans 19-6 making this year’s game the 12 consecutive win for the Wahawks. The winning streak started in the 2013-2014 football season when West beat East 28-0 on Oct. 3, 2013. Since then, the Wahawks have been victorious when facing the Trojans.
Every year the students of West High look forward to facing their rivals from across the river, creating shirts that say “BEAT EAST” and partaking in the rivalry that has been instilled in the school for several years.
When describing the tradition of the cross-river rivalry, senior Karma Goodson shares that “being able to experience the tradition of east-west as a Wahawk is exhilarating, the atmosphere, the energy, and the high intensity leading up to the game always gets me excited.” She continues to say that “The East vs. West game is an outlet for students to show their support for not only their school but their community.”
Senior Nate Kline was included in the class 5A stat leaders list after week one of high school football, being ranked fourth for rushing yards with a total of 204. Kline shares that his game this year was unusual. “I made the switch to running back around the middle of the summer, and this was a new position for me that I haven’t ever played.” Since teammate Ben Frazier was out due to injury this game, Kline states that he got the majority of the carries, his total being 44.
For the past two years, Kline has played safety, “but this time around I was still playing safety but also getting heavy use at running back, which was a huge difference for me.”
Although the game felt unusual, Kline also shared that this year’s game “felt different because last year’s graduating class wasn’t there with me this time. Every East/West game before this I’ve played with the class of 24, and they did a great job helping to lead us.”
“The East vs West tradition means a lot to us high school athletes. It’s a game we look forward to every year, having a good time taunting each other and having fun in a sportsman-like manner.” states senior Emma Beckman. “Everyone gathers for football games to support the team.”
