Success Street is a resource West High offers for all students. At Success Street, students have confidential access to individual therapy sessions, interventions, and discussions about sexual health, STDs, sexual assault, birth control, and substance abuse treatments.
Our high school must have resources for teenagers struggling with mental health, as 22% of high school students admit to considering suicide, and that percentage has significantly risen over the last 5 years. Mental health therapist at Unity Point, Sam Rasmussen, says, “The more we spread awareness the more we hope to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and accessing mental health services. We have made tremendous progress at doing so, but there is still a lot of work left to be done.”
Success Street can also provide students with hotline numbers and other organizations they can contact for various crises.
West High has several accommodations and helpful resources. Another one of these valuable tools is the counseling office, which students can use for support and guidance.
The West High counseling team is dedicated to student success, helping students excel academically and personally. They support various issues, including credit recovery, self-esteem building, and general problem-solving.
If you’re struggling and need help, you can visit the counseling office in two ways:
- Schedule an appointment on Calendly through the West High Counseling webpage on the West High website.
- Try drop-in appointments by stopping by to see if your counselor is available.
The counselors’ primary goal is to create a safer and healthier environment at West High.
“We offer support in social and emotional well-being, college and career planning, and academic areas, among other services. Our dedicated counseling team works hard to assist students in many different aspects of their lives,” said Mr. Moore, 9th and 10th grade counselor. Our counselors are always ready to help students in need. The counselors strive to create a safe space for everyone and are always willing to help.
Don’t be afraid to speak up if you need assistance at the counseling office or success street!
