The summer is a time for relaxation, but not in the halls of West High School that is. Ceiling panels were taken down and wiring was installed as the halls became littered with new security cameras. Over 150 cameras to be exact.
The funding for these security cameras came from a new program called the “School Safety Initiative”, stated Andy Miehe, Head Principal of West High School. Miehe went on in further detail to say “We have a few more cameras, better views, updated technology, and overall better coverage of both the interior and exterior of the building”.
The School Safety Initiative is a new program established by Governor Kim Reynolds. This plan provides funding for both public and private schools in the State of Iowa, allowing them to combat threats and maintain an environment where students can learn and grow.
Outside of the School Safety Initiative, “The previous cameras were getting old and the video quality was getting bad”, said Kristen Johnson, a member of Campus Security. “The clarity on the new cameras is really good”.
The new security cameras brought a whole new look to the school as some cameras had two lenses while others had the normal singular bulb. Johnson went on to explain that some cameras, like the ones used in the main hall, need multiple angles to view the entire space.
Overall the new security cameras serve their purpose as a way to maintain safety both inside and outside the walls of West High School.
