Andy Miehe, the head principal of West High, enforces school policies and oversees the overall student and administrative body. Miehe started at West High in 2015 and was nominated for Administrator of the Year last year.
“This was all very unexpected, the journalism crew (Wahawk Insider, Yearbook, Journalism classes) had me stop by last spring and told me they had nominated me for the award, to be honest it was not something I ever considered being awarded but I did feel that I had already won if the students at West thought enough of my efforts to nominate me, that is a win in my book, the rest is just a great surprise,” Miehe shares, “It has impacted me in a way that has helped me reflect on our school community in a very positive light.”
“Crazy enough I missed the initial congratulations email and I still have not read the nomination,” Miehe says, “I think I am just still a little surprised at all of it. If you look at the work they have done with the Wahawk Insider and how that publication has evolved and grown you can see that our students are hyper focused on generating a quality product students are proud of. “
The West High Journalism program has become an important addition to the Wahawk community in recent years. After the yearbook program has grown and the student newspaper program has grown and the student newspaper was brought back to life, the program has worked to establish itself. Miehe proclaims, “I think this program is critical to our school community spreading the news of all things West High. There are stories that highlight students and staff in a way that allow those who are not on campus everyday to really see and feel what it means to be a Wahawk and experience a successful comprehensive high school. The Journalism program engages with all aspects of campus life and this well all encompassing and inclusive approach is one of the things we love about our school.”
A big congratulations to our own administrator of the year. Miehe is someone that we all look up to and he has committed to hard days of work at West High and for that we thank him. If you see Miehe in the hallway, do not forget to say, “congratulations!”
