On the evening of October 30, 2024, the Los Angeles Dodgers made history once again, winning their eighth World Series. Through five crazy baseball games, the best of the best came out on top with the Dodgers ready to claim their crown. The 2024 World Series has been called the craziest since 2016 by many, with the Dodgers almost gaining a full sweep against the New York Yankees.
For readers who are not familiar with the World Series, this is an annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB) that is generally held in October. One team from the American League (AL) and one team from the National League (NL) are selected to play in this championship series. There have only been two years since 1903 when the World Series has yet to be played; 1903 and 1994. The first team to win four games in the series will win the World Series.
Breakdown
The Yankees started things off strong when in the bottom of the first inning Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run for the Yankees. Shortly after Jazz Chisolm also hit a home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Dodgers also entered the game with two back-to-back home runs by Jack Flaherty.
Right after, in the bottom of the second inning, shortstop Anthony Volpe hit a double into left field which put him into a scoring position for Alex Verdugo to hit an RBI homerun.
In the bottom of the third inning, Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run as well. This is the home run that tied him with Mickey Mantle, and became the first Yankee to hit 18 postseason home runs. Right after Mookie Betts proceeded to make one of the best diving catches of the game for the Dodgers.
Right after in the top of the fourth inning Aaron Judge had one of the best leaping catches of the game as well.
In the top of the fifth inning, Mookie Betts batted in an RBI single bringing the game to 1-5; Yankees. Shortly after Freddie Freeman hit a two-run single for the Dodgers. This is the final RBI that brought Freeman up with Bobby Richardson with a final of twelve RBIs in the postseason. This is where things start to go downhill for the Yankees and where the Dodgers start to gain a slight lead.
In the fifth inning, the Yankees felt as if all was lost. Aaron Judge made his first error of the year where he dropped a fly ball and missed an easy out. The Yankees began to have error after error and while things were spiraling for the Yankees Gerrit Cole remained grounded and kept his head in the game to pull through the inning for the rest of his teammates.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees get redemption and finally pull ahead of the Dodgers, giving them a 6-5 lead.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Dodgers scored two runs and the Yankees fell behind. This is where the Dodgers pull ahead for the rest of the game, making them the 2024 World Series Champions.
From two coasts, 2800 miles away from each other the two best teams in baseball and two of the most renowned teams when it comes to the world series battled it out for five days and the Dodgers finally came out on top. Who were you rooting for this year?
