West High has so many clubs to offer, one of these clubs is called The Wahawk Student Senate. Student Senate is a student-run organization that aims to improve the lives of each and every student who walks the halls of West High school. Student Senate plans Prom, Homecoming Week events and so much more.

The student body Vice President Amy Perez, joined Wahawk Student Senate halfway through her freshman year. Perez suggests that everybody should get involved in one way or another. Senate was a way for her to “become more social and meet so many more amazing people.” Perez consistently shows up to Student Senate every Wednesday and is a large contributor to all of the ins and outs of our Student Senate. Perez looks forward to their leadership conference at Iowa State University each year. Everyday is a new day for her to grow and she values making the lives of others better day by day.
The Student Senate secretary, June Bertram, is a big advocate for the Student Senate. Bertram believes that Student Senate is underrepresented in the community and at West High, making available volunteer opportunities visible to the student body and allowing accessibility for the student body to help out are both priorities for Bertram.
The most recent adventure that Senate has supported was UNI’s Pack the Dome. This happens every year on Martin Luther King Day, this year over 1,000 people including our Wahawks who came together to pack over 50,000 bags for food-insecure children in the Cedar Valley. These bags include kid-friendly meals for children who may not have access to food at home, many of these items include ramen, juice boxes, crackers and snack bags.
With your help Student Senate can continue to achieve all of its goals. It can be confusing to differentiate what the Student Senate actually does, so don’t be afraid. If you ever want to volunteer, learn more or have any questions, reach out to your student body president Jayna Gomez, or attend a meeting. The Student Senate meets each Wednesday at 7 a.m. in Mrs.Mcleans room (331).
