Wahawks Defeat Cedar Rapid Jefferson

Ali Parkhurst and Cavelle Fay

Friday October 7th, the Wahawks took on Cedar Rapids Jefferson at Memorial Stadium. Prior to the game, the Wahawks had a record of 1-4 and Jefferson 0-5. Jefferson has been winless since the 2019 season.

The Wahawks secured their second win with a score of 42-3 with six touchdowns all in the first half of the game.

Senior Cavelle Fay started the game off with a 66-yard kickoff return. Fay would go on to score two touchdowns in the first half of the game, one being just in time for the first quarter buzzer, leaving the score at 21-3.

Captain Terez Smith says this win reflects the effort his team has put in because “That game really showed how we improved as a team and that was the motivation we needed. Things haven’t been going our way lately but the fact that we still haven’t given up as a team is good.”

Alex Willis got West’s offense going with a touchdown pass to Terez Smith, Smith’s first touchdown of the season. Willis continues on with another touchdown pass to Parker Engstrom.

Willis worked in a creative lateral pass to his brother Josh who then proceeded to score a 34-yard touchdown. Alex Willis finished off the second quarter with a 52-yard touchdown pass to Depree Banks, ending the first half with a score of 42-3.

Neither West nor Jefferson scored throughout the second half of the game leaving the Wahawks with their second victory of the 2022-23 season.

West High will take on Dubuque Hempstead at Hempstead High School this coming Friday, October 14th. Next Friday, October 21st, West will play Ottumwa at memorial stadium in the final game of the season, as well as West Senior night.
