Moses was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa. As the fifth and youngest child of his parents Doris and James “Lefty” Moses, growing up he exemplified what it meant to be a Waterloo citizen. Moses started off at Grant Elementary School before moving on to Logan Middle School. Pre-High school athletics Tim Moses would play Leisure services baseball.

Tim Moses would follow the same path as his four older siblings as he would attend Waterloo East High School and eventually graduate with the class of 1982. At East High School Tim Moses would participate and letter in football, track and basketball. Growing up in all these sports only furthered his love for athletics.

After high school Tim Moses would go on to Ellsworth Community College where he would continue playing football and earn his Associate of Arts degree in 1983. After his Junior College Career, Tim Moses would transfer to the University of Northern Iowa returning back home to the Cedar Valley. While finishing his football career with Northern Iowa he would also earn three full degrees; Bachelor of Arts (1995), Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (1998) and lastly, Master of Arts in Educational Leadership (2004).

During his time in college Tim Moses was a part of historic football teams at the University of Northern Iowa where he helped lead the team to a 20-4 record throughout his two years and reaching the FCS semifinals his senior year where they lost to the eventual national champions Georgia Southern 40-33.

Along with himself Tim Moses has over 20 relatives who have taken a similar path through the Waterloo Schools District.

Mr. Moses

Tim Moses discovered he would enjoy teaching when he became the first African-American Youth Sports Director at the YMCA of Black Hawk County.  “During that time at the YMCA, I found other opportunities and the avenue of teaching,” Tim Moses said. “I went back to UNI for my third degree… your education is going to take you further than your athletics. I found something that I enjoy and I’ve been at it for a long time,” shares Tim Moses.

Tim Moses would find his first teaching position at Logan Middle School where he then moved over to Waterloo East High School and Expo Alternative Center. More recently he was a Social Studies teacher at Central Middle School before accepting the Athletic Director position back at his Alma Mater. During his almost 30 year tenure as a Waterloo schools teacher he also spent 25 years as the head coach for the East High track team and another five as an assistant coach.

Outside of Waterloo Schools Tim Moses has multiple honorable positions in athletics such as serving on the Iowa High School Athletic Director Executive Committee, UNI-Dome Campaign Steering Committee and Waterloo Leisure Services Commission Board Member.

What Now?

Tim Moses is officially the primary Athletic Director for the new Waterloo United high school with his tenure starting this upcoming 2026-2027 school year(per Waterloo Schools press release).

During the April 27. school board, meeting the official approval of this position reassignment received a unanimous vote and appointed Tim Moses his new position. As well as appointing the new athletic director, the combination of six more sports teams were voted upon following the presentation from the Director of Secondary Education and Athletics Josh Payton.

Although the schools do not officially combine students until the 2028-2029 school year, Tim Moses is tasked with the oversight of the 12 athletic teams that will be unified for the 2026-2027 school year. Six athletic teams, boys’ and girls’ swimming, boys’ and girls’ tennis, girls’ wrestling, and girls’ soccer were already combined but participating under West High branding. The other six athletic teams consisting of: boys’ and girls’ cross country, boys’ and girls’ bowling, boys’ wrestling, and volleyball were all unanimously chosen by the board to combine for the upcoming school year. All 12 teams will compete under United Titans branding and colors as well as participate under the Missouri Valley Conference schedule.

The Moses Vision

Tim Moses has been a pioneer of the Unified schools campaign showing his support since the initial proposal of the new school. “For 55 years, I’ve held a single vision: every Waterloo athlete, from every corner of the city, finally competing as one,” Tim Moses said. “The wait is over. Together, we are Waterloo United.”

“My vision is to make Waterloo United High School a destination school for all students coming up through the ranks of our school systems,” Tim Moses said.  “I want kids to be excited and proud to be a Titan. In addition, I want the Community Spirit to be  electric and energetic,” he says.

“This unification is important for many reasons, however the biggest reason is the fact that  everyone in the State is watching how this merger works out. Because, it’s never been done before by two schools the size of East and West, and that has the types of rich traditions that these two schools have,” Tim Moses said when asked about the importance of such a large combination. “We have the possibility to set the standard for the rest of this State, and I am confident and determined to see that we dot every I, and we cross every T,” shares Tim Moses.

“He (Tim Moses) approaches his role with a clear sense of purpose, always keeping the long-term success of student-athletes and the program at the center of his decisions” said Sue Moses, Wife of Tim. “What stands out most about Tim is his ability to inspire confidence through both his actions and his outlook… his commitment to growth, collaboration, and doing things the right way gives me strong confidence in his leadership,” said Sue Moses.

Along with Tim Moses’ vision with athletics, members of Waterloo schools have shown the same confidence in Tim Moses leading the charge. “Tim’s deep roots and proven leadership at Waterloo East have built a legacy of service to our student-athletes,” Director of Secondary Education and Athletics Josh Payton said. “His passion for this community is unmatched, making him the ideal leader to guide our transition to a Waterloo United athletic program in the fall of 2028,” said Josh Payton.
