Past Print Issues

Waterloo West used to have an award-winning print newspaper called The Spectator. However, in 2015 the newspaper ceased publication. In 2022, West High brought back a student newspaper in a digital form, the Wahawk Insider. Then, in the 2023-2024 school year, a print publication was brought back to the student body in the form of a NewsMagazine. Click on any of our magazine covers to read a digital version of the issue.

Volume 1 Issue 1 | October 25, 2023

Our cover story, written by Alisyn Parkhurst, follows the story of Keegan Nystrom. In his 5th grade year, Nystrom vowed that as long as he was on the football team, West High would never lose to their cross-town rival, East High. After winning their senior year match-up, his prophecy came true.

Volume 1 Issue 2 | January 19, 2024

This cover story, written by Mallory Mills and Lucy Prescott, covers Iowa Bill SF-496, which impacts student gender identity in public schools. Junior Percy Batista-Pedro joined other Iowan families as plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the Iowa Legislature.

Volume 1 Issue 3 | March 22, 2024

“What does it mean to be pretty?” is our cover story written by Kaylynn Crawford. This story dives deep into unrealistic beauty standards and how that impacts teenagers.

Volume 2 Issue 1 | November 1, 2024

In our first magazine of the 2024-2025 school year, our cover concept discusses school spirit, both the traditions carried and the lack of spirit. Written by Jacy Gomez, Kaylynn Crawford, and Aven Winberg, this story covers all sides of the issue.
