Sleepy Hollow has four characters who share the responsibility of carrying the story of Sleepy Hollow forward. Ichabod Crane, the stern pedagogue; Katrina van Tassel, the dream girl; Crayon, the storyteller; and Brom Bones, the maker of mischief. In this final week leading up to the big production, one actor will share their story each day, with a special guest for the final drop.
Our first feature today is Kyle, a senior at West, who recently joined the West High Theatre department last year during large group speech. He is playing the role of Ichabod Crane.
Q: What is your favorite part of this play?
A: I love the comedy of this adaptation. The original book doesn’t have as much enjoyable character interaction.
Q: What is your favorite part about your character?
A: I think Ichabod is a very complex character. He tries to be in control of his classroom, but it gets torn apart. He tries to woo Katrina, but… (come to the show to find out more!)
Q: How’d you feel when you found out you got the role?
A: I was ecstatic and slightly confused. Partially because of the funny business Hirdler pulled with his rickroll. But I also just wasn’t certain I’d get the lead role! It’s my first time as a lead, so I’m very excited.
Q: What are your opinions on the directors?
A: I think that Dawson is a lot of fun, even though it can be a little tough to work with him. He really is a good director, and he knows what he’s doing. Regan is just a great person, and always enjoyable to be around. She also has pretty good directing chops!
Q: How do you memorize your lines?
A: Personally, I think it comes down to how much you run them. Especially with a partner. Do that for long enough, and you’ll surely be good to go.
Q: Do you have any goals going forward?
A: My goal is to improve my acting and singing, and perhaps someday get paid for my work! Wouldn’t that be crazy? But really, I adore acting, and I hope to become better every day.
Q: Why should people come see the show?
A: I think this show is a lot of fun, and I bet we’ll have some cool sets and effects. The actors are great as well! I love my co-stars.
Q: Why should people come audition for West Theatre?
A: I was never a “theater kid.” For a while, I didn’t even really have a “club” that I fit into at school. But, on a whim, I decided to try out for large group contest last year, and I’ve never looked back. Being involved with theater has been a very fulfilling experience for me, and I encourage anyone who is willing to take the craft seriously to give it a shot!
And with that, it’s a wrap on today’s behind-the-scenes of Sleepy Hollow. There are four days left until opening night. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Shows are November 6 at 7 pm, November 7 at 7 pm, and November 8 at 2 pm. Come out and support your fellow Wahawks!
