The Speedo Run is a long-standing tradition at West High that signals the start of winter break. Every year, the boys swim team runs through the school wearing their Speedos while blasting Christmas music. Although it may seem unusual, this tradition dates back to the early 2000s and has become a highly anticipated moment for both the team and the student body.
Sophomore Brayden Snider appreciates the humor in this West High tradition. “I heard the music and I looked out of my class and I was surprised to see a bunch of men in Speedos,” he said. “It was funny.”
The Speedo Run happens annually on the day before winter break, beginning around 7:40 a.m., right before classes start. While the sight of students running through the halls in swim attire may seem a bit odd, the event draws a large crowd into the hallways and creates a festive atmosphere. This year, on Dec. 18 at 7:40 a.m., the swim team started their sprint.
Looking back on the tradition, current assistant coach and former Waterloo swim captain Jackson McNally shared his experience participating in the run. “It was something that we as the team always looked forward to during the season,” McNally said. “I always had a great time running through the halls with my teammates. Great way to kick off winter break.”

With this tradition attracting an audience of the entire school, it might seem nerve-wracking to take part in such a bold tradition. However, McNally said the team dynamic helped ease any embarrassment. “I wasn’t too nervous or embarrassed since the whole team was also running along with me,” he said. He was “more excited than nervous.”
Another notable aspect of the Speedo Run is the passing down of the same Santa hats used year after year. The iconic “DUNCE” Santa hat is always awarded to the swimmer nominated by the team as the least competent swimmer. Once the run concludes, the team continues the tradition by going out for a team breakfast at Village Inn.
Current swim team captain Jay Esmael emphasized the importance of team bonding. “Team bonding is a specialty of the swim team,” said Esmael. “Having a small team is great because of the opportunities for us to come together and strengthen our relationship. Village Inn after the Speedo run helps strengthen our team’s relationship with each other, ensuring fun times for everyone. It helps create an environment where you wouldn’t want to leave.”
For students who have yet to witness it, the Speedo Run is a tradition worth seeing. Between the loud Christmas music, cheering students, and the swim team’s enthusiasm, the event brings energy and excitement to the school and serves as a memorable send-off before winter break begins. “It DEFINITELY brings out our school spirit,” said freshman Jessica Self.
