On Friday, Jan. 26, the Wahawk Women’s Wrestling team traveled to Mason City, Iowa for the Super Regionals Tournament. For the 2023-24 wrestling season, the top four wrestlers in each weight class from each region punch their ticket to the State Tournament at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville.

West High wrestled in District 7 alongside schools such as Cedar Falls, Waverly-Shell Rock, West Delaware, Cascade, Tripoli and 18 other schools. Out of all 24 schools, West placed 15th.

After wrestling a 4-2 day at the Regional Tournament, junior Kammie Gleiter secured her spot at the state tournament with a fourth place finish in the 115 pound weight class.

“It felt amazing knowing that I could represent my school at such large tournament but also knowing that this is only my second year and I’m doing things some people can’t in six. I also felt proud knowing that my hard work has paid off and all the support everyone has given me drove me to this point of success,” Gleiter shares.

As Gleiter received a bye in the first round of the tournament, within her 6 matches, Gleiter lost only to West Fork’s Teaghan Bird and Clear Lake’s Saphira Olsen. She defeated Oelwein’s Ryley Hartman, Humboldt’s Gracey May, Postville’s Bernice Garcia and Charles City’s Emma Schmitt to earn her fourth place finish.

“I’ve improved overall mentally, if I go out there knowing I’ve worked hard and I deserve to win nothing can break me. I’ve learned to take every loss as a learning experience instead of failure. I’ve also improved in the room, working consistently, putting in work outside of the room as well, going to the gym and working on my stamina to keep up. Every bit counts,” she shares.

I’m excited to attend this year’s state tournament. I am ready to go and leave it all out in the mat knowing I’ve worked for everything I have this year

— Kammie Gleiter '25

As Gleiter heads to Coralville on Thursday, Feb. 1, her teammates and coaches will follow her to cheer her on. Junior Reagan Westphal, a first year wrestler, shares that she is excited to experience the state tournament and watch Gleiter, “Kammie was always at my matches cheering for me up until the second she had to wrestle so I can’t wait to cheer for her as loud as I can and see her wrestle,” Westphal shares.

Westphal notes Gleiter’s dedication to the sport, stating that her passion has played a part in the atmosphere of the team. “Kammie has been working hard since the beginning of the season to this moment. When I first joined the team I knew that Kammie was going to go far. Kammie’s passion for wrestling rubbed off on not only me but I think as a whole team. Her leadership and dedication to the sport of wrestling makes me have nothing but joy and excitement for her,” she says.

Representing Waterloo alongside Gleiter is sophomore Libby Stocks from East High, also wrestling in the 115 pound weight class.
